<p>Engage in conversation with a Mia guide while exploring &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/containing-multitudes">Containing Multitudes</a>,&#8221; focusing on how photographic practices reflect varied perspectives and lived experiences within American culture.</p>

<p>Join Liu Yang, Mia’s chair of Asian art and curator of Chinese art, for a special lecture celebrating the exhibition &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/year-of-the-horse">Year of the Horse: Hoofbeats Through Time</a>,&#8221; now on view at Mia.</p>
<p>In this illuminating talk, &#8220;Year of the Horse: In the Wake of the Gallop,&#8221; Liu examines the horse as one of the most enduring and evocative symbols in Chinese art and culture. Drawing on works spanning more than three millennia—from ritual bronzes and tomb figures to imperial jades and paintings, as well as intimate scholar’s objects—he traces how images of the horse came to embody power, mobility, virtue, and aspiration. The lecture offers behind-the-scenes insight into the exhibition’s thematic vision and reflects on how cultural symbols continue to shape artistic expression and human experience across time.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-115272 alignleft" src="https://images.artsmia.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/12115654/liu-yang-1.jpg" alt="Headshot of Yang Liu" width="98" height="98" /><strong>Liu Yang</strong> is the chair of Asian art and curator of Chinese art at Mia. He earned his PhD in art history and archaeology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Before Mia, he was the senior curator of Chinese art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and an adjunct professor at the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. Since 1998, Liu has organized more than a dozen traveling exhibitions from China, including &#8220;China’s First Emperor,&#8221; which set an attendance record. His exhibitions &#8220;Power and Beauty in China’s Last Dynasty&#8221; (2018) and &#8220;Eternal Offerings: Chinese Ritual Bronzes&#8221; (2023), collaborations with avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson and Oscar-winning film artistic director Tim Yip, were widely acclaimed. Liu has authored numerous books and exhibition catalogues, three of which received awards.</p>


<p>Experience Mia’s special exhibition “<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/modern-art-politics-germany-1910-1945">Modern Art and Politics in Germany 1910–1945: Masterworks from the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin</a>” through the artist&#8217;s lens. In this five-part Studio Sessions series, Mia teaching artists will help you explore the major creative periods reflected in the exhibition. All experience levels are welcome in Studio Sessions classes, no prior experience required.</p>

<h3>March 14 | Expressionism: Exploring Color through Still Life in Oil Pastel</h3>
<p>In the early 1900s, the Expressionist movement produced artwork that depicted emotional states and subjective takes on reality through new uses of color, materials, and more.  In this class, we’ll discuss Expressionism, color relationships, and psychology through color. You&#8217;ll draw still life pieces with a focus on color to relay meaning. You can bring your own still life items to draw or select from options provided by Mia. At the end of the workshop, you&#8217;re invited to view the special exhibition.</p>
<h3>April 11 | Drawing in the Galleries: A Close Look at Art through Sketching</h3>
<p>Explore the masterworks from the Neue Nationalgalerie alongside works from Mia’s collection in this class all about drawing. We&#8217;ll start in Mia’s studio classrooms before heading into the exhibition to study a few selected pieces for drawing, guided by Mia teaching artist Michael Gaughan. You&#8217;ll share your sketches with classmates and discuss the works presented in the exhibition.</p>
<h3>May 9 | New Objectivity: Portraiture in Paint</h3>
<p>In the 1920s, artists reacted to Expressionism by creating art that was realistic, provocative, and often unsentimental. In this Studio Sessions class, try your hand at New Objectivity by working from a live model and a limited paint palette to create a portrait. Teaching artist Sophia Weisensel will discuss mixing and using a limited palette, capturing a portrait, and elements of composition. You&#8217;re invited to visit the special exhibition at the end of the workshop to view the portraits that inspired the class.</p>
<h3>June 13 | Drawing in the Galleries: A Close Look at Art through Sketching</h3>
<p>Explore the masterworks from the Neue Nationalgalerie alongside works from Mia’s collection in this class all about drawing. We&#8217;ll start with a presentation in Mia’s studio classrooms before heading into the exhibition study a few selected pieces for drawing, guided by Mia teaching artist Sophia Weisensel. You&#8217;ll share your sketches with classmates and discuss the works presented in the exhibition.</p>
<h3><strong> </strong>July 11 | Abstract Art: Paul Klee–Inspired Abstract Painting</h3>
<p>The societal shifts after World War I contributed to artists seeing line, shape, and color as material for experimentation. Famous schools like the Bauhaus in Germany rose to prominence, engaging some of the most influential artists of the modern age. In this Studio Sessions class, teaching artist Akiko Ostlund will guide you through an exploration of abstract art, inspired by Paul Klee, a Swiss-German artist who was influenced by both art and music and produced paintings that redefined color theory during the early 1900s. We&#8217;ll discuss basic color theory and create rhythmic, emotional abstract paintings using grids, oil pastels, and watercolors. At the end of the workshop, you&#8217;re invited to view the special exhibition.</p>

<p>Join Lucia Yess of Yess Yoga for a series of art and wellness programs at Mia. These quarterly classes explore different yoga practices in connection to Mia’s collection. Enjoy 45–60 minutes of yoga before exploring Mia’s galleries. We&#8217;ll have a few mats available for use, but we encourage you to bring your own mat and props if able.</p>

<p>Join Mia and The National WWII Museum for a collaborative educator workshop exploring the powerful connections between art, history, and culture.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll begin the day with a presentation by a National WWII Museum curator on the political and social climate in Germany leading up to World War II, followed by an experiential visit to Mia’s special exhibition &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/modern-art-politics-germany-1910-1945">Modern Art &amp; Politics in Germany 1910–1945: Masterworks from the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin</a>.&#8221; Together, we’ll examine how the rise of totalitarianism impacted artists, how certain forms of artistic expression were censored or suppressed, and how art became both a reflection of and a response to political upheaval.</p>
<p>In the afternoon, you&#8217;ll explore classroom-ready resources from both institutions. The National WWII Museum will present <em>Stolen! Saving Europe’s Treasures</em>, an exploration of the massive art thefts that occurred during WWII, as well as its <em>Homefront</em> and <em>Liberation &amp; Legacy</em> curriculum guides. Mia educators will introduce the <em>Modern Art &amp; Politics in Germany</em> educator guide and related activities that connect the exhibition to Mia’s permanent collection.</p>
<p>This interdisciplinary professional development opportunity will equip you with new tools for engaging students in the study of history through art, deepening their understanding of how culture both shapes and reflects pivotal historical moments.</p>
<p>Breakfast, lunch, and curriculum materials are provided. Registration opens February 2 and closes March 2. The workshop has a capacity of 30 participants.</p>
