Vitality Arts: Watercolor for Beginners

<p>Can art rewrite history—and shape what comes next? MacArthur “Genius” and acclaimed artist Titus Kaphar says yes. Join us for a bold and expansive talk where Kaphar reveals how art can do more than reflect the world we live in. It can help us heal—both as individuals and as a society.</p>
<p>Kaphar draws on the themes in the special exhibition &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/exhibiting-forgiveness">Exhibiting Forgiveness</a>&#8221; and his celebrated feature film of the same name to discuss how art can teach us how to manifest futures fundamentally different from our present.</p>
<p>A free celebratory reception follows the talk.</p>

<p>Join us for a free screening of Titus Kaphar’s debut feature film, <em>Exhibiting Forgiveness</em>.</p>
<p>The film follows a Black artist on the path to success who receives an unexpected visit from his estranged father. It delves into trauma, resilience, and the power of art, and premiered at Sundance alongside works by titans like Steven Soderbergh. <em>Exhibiting Forgiveness</em> is “strikingly flawless” (RogerEbert.com) and “visually stunning” (Deadline). Variety calls it “a feel-the-reality movie, a drama willing to scald. That’s its quiet power.”</p>
<p>The works of art featured in the film are on view in the exhibition &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/exhibiting-forgiveness">Exhibiting Forgiveness</a>,&#8221; on view from September 12, 2026, through January 3, 2027.</p>

<p>For more than 25 years, American Pottery Festival (APF) has brought together nationally recognized ceramic artists, collectors, students, and clay enthusiasts for a weekend celebrating the best of contemporary ceramics.</p>
<p>As part of APF, join Northern Clay Center and Mia for a special talk and demonstration by artist KyoungHwa Oh.</p>

<h2>About the Artist</h2>
<p>KyoungHwa Oh was born in Seoul, South Korea, where she studied fashion design before moving to the U.S. and eventually began working in ceramics. Oh received her MFA from Southern Illinois University and joined Colorado Mesa University as an associate professor of art. Her work consists of functional and sculptural carved porcelain. First, her pieces are thrown on the wheel, and then altered by cutting, adding clay, and carving to create new forms. Oh encompasses the influence between traditional Asian values and modern Western society.</p>

<p>Join instructor Coco Connolly and explore some of the fundamental techniques of watercolor painting. Each week you’ll learn a different skill, such as wet in wet for blending and soft gradients, wet on dry for details, and glazing for glowing effects.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll have the opportunity to apply what you learn to a painting each week inspired by the still life and landscape works of David Hockney. Demonstrations and handouts of each week’s lesson will support you in your learning journey.</p>

<p>Discover the creative possibilities of working with clay in this introductory hand-building class. We&#8217;ll explore foundational ceramic techniques, including pinch pots, coil building, and slab construction, while creating functional and sculptural pieces.</p>
<p>Teaching artist Evelyn Staats will guide you through demonstrations of essential hand-building methods, from forming and shaping to surface decoration and finishing touches. Along the way, find inspiration in Mia&#8217;s remarkable collection of ceramics through occasional gallery visits. Most class sessions are devoted to hands-on studio time, with opportunities for creative exploration, individual instruction, and group conversation as you develop your own unique ceramic work.</p>
