CLE: Who Owns Matisse?

In conjunction with the Matisse: Masterworks from the Baltimore Museum of Art exhibition, the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) has partnered with Thomson Reuters to host an engaging and highly visual panel discussion on the intersection of law and art. This course has been approved by the Minnesota State Board of Continuing Legal Education for 1.5 hours in the standard continuing legal education category of credit.

The panel will explore the legal aspects of art ownership and its complications. The recent blockbuster movie The Monuments Men, about looted art during World War II, have renewed interest in the questions surrounding museum ownership, artist rights, and holding artwork in trust for the public. All of these topics will be addressed as related to the Matisse exhibition and the MIA’s collection.

This program is for anyone interested learning more about the fascinating intersection of law and art.

Moderator and Panelists:

  • Rick King, Chief Operating Officer for Technology, Thomson Reuters (moderator)
  • The Honorable Judge David S. Doty, United States District Court for the District of Minnesota
  • Professor Stephen J. Cribari, University of Minnesota Law School
  • Erika Holmquist-Wall, Assistant Curator, Paintings and Provenance Specialist, Minneapolis Institute of Art
