Delacroix Unframed: A Study Day

Immerse yourself in the life and work of Eugène Delacroix, subject of the special exhibition, “Delacroix’s Influence: The Rise of Modern Art from Cézanne to van Gogh.” This half-day program will provide a multidisciplinary, in-depth look at the artist’s work. Programming includes:

11am Talk: “Eugène Delacroix 1863 – 1912”
Chris Riopelle, Curator of Post-1800 Paintings at the National Gallery, London, speaks about Delacroix’s influence on the generation of painters who came after him – including the Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and Expressionists.

12:15pm Lunch & Lecture: “Orientalism Imagined, Experienced, Reimagined”
Patrick Noon, Elizabeth MacMillan Chair of Paintings at Mia, will speak about how Delacroix explored and influenced, through three distinct phases, the art historical phenomenon of Orientalism.

Attendees will also enjoy a Moroccan-inspired lunch (vegetarian options will be available) during the talk.

1:30pm Talk & Reading: “The Literary World of Delacroix”
Andrea Kaston Tange, Professor of English at Macalester College, speaks about the connections between visual and literary arts, particularly in terms of Delacroix’s influences–including the English poet George Gordon, Lord Byron; and the French poet Charles Baudelaire, who described Delacroix as “a poet in painting”.

2:45pm Talk & Performance: “Delacroix & Chopin”
The day will conclude with a talk by Mischa Santora, Artistic Director of MacPhail’s Spotlight Series, examining Delacroix’s friendship with Chopin, and the elements of connection between their musical and visual styles.  This will be followed by a performance of Chopin’s music by internationally-recognized pianists Irina and Julia Elkina.

$80, $64 Mia members. Includes all talks, lunch, and exhibition admission. To register, call (612) 870-6323 or reserve online.
