From Minnesota to Malibu: J. Paul Getty and the Joys of Collecting

Born in Minneapolis, Jean Paul Getty (1882-1976) was a man of many talents: an oil-field wildcatter, a shrewd and spectacularly successful businessman, a writer, and a member of the international art world. Although he maintained that “fine art is the finest investment,” he also felt that “few human activities provide an individual with a greater sense of personal gratification than the assembling of a collection of art objects that appeal to him and that he feels have a true and lasting beauty.” This talk will present an overview of Getty’s career as a collector that ultimately led to the foundation of the museum in Los Angeles that bears his name.

Davide Gasparotto, senior curator and head of the Painting Department at the Getty Museum, specializes in painting, sculpture, and the decorative arts of the Italian Renaissance.
