Heaven and Hell: Salvation and Retribution in Pure Land Buddhism

Discover the arts of the Pure Land sect of Buddhism, the focus of a 2017 exhibition to feature masterpieces of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese art from Mia. Emily Sano will examine early evidence for belief in Amitabha, the Buddha of the Western Paradise at the center of Pure Land faith, and notions of rebirth in heaven or hell that developed in China and subsequently shaped Japanese religious beliefs for several centuries. From these beliefs emerged a rich tradition of Buddhist painting and sculpture that stretches from the 12th to the 19th centuries and into the
present day.

Emily Sano, PhD, is Coates-Cowden-Brown Senior Advisor for Asian Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art and Director Emerita of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (1993–2008), where she oversaw the museum’s move from Golden Gate Park to the Civic Center.
