Sketching in the Galleries: Principles of Design, Contrast

The juxtaposition of dissimilar elements creates contrast, one of the necessary design aspects of successful works of art. Dramatic effects are of course one of the results of contrast, but subtle contrasts can also have a profound effect on feeling and content. We will explore various types of visual contrast in the classroom and create them in drawings from works in the galleries.
