Sketching in the Galleries: Principles of Design, Emphasis/Subordination

Emphasis and subordination create the hierarchy of an artwork. Emphasis is an area or passage that draws attention to itself. It exists in comparison to subordination, areas or passages that are secondary, supporting the emphasis of the work. Students will explore these compositional tools to create such passages while drawing from works in Mia’s collection.
