Collaboratively lead the museum in the development of engaging audience-centered interpretive strategies that support the mission by creating meaningful experiences with our global collections. Design, plan, implement, and evaluate interpretive initiatives and develop participatory and innovative programming surrounding special projects, exhibitions, and the permanent collection.
In this role, you will…
- Establish department priorities and long-range plans, and administer the department in a manner that serves the MIA’s diverse audiences and volunteers. Develop and manage program budgets.
- Provide collaborative leadership for the development of an Institutional Interpretive Plan.
- Research content and recommend strategies for object and exhibition interpretation.
- Provide leadership and vision for the I&PE staff. Work with staff in guiding and maintaining relationships with volunteer Docent and Guide corps and the museum.
- Serve as a leader or member of multiple teams that develop and implement interpretive strategies, learning experiences and media content.
- Contribute to the development of formal/informal evaluation tools for ongoing assessment of innovation initiatives, interpretive strategies, and visitor research.
- Collaborate with and advise staff on enrichment/development activities for the existing Docent/Guide crops, communication with Docents, evaluation, and recruiting and training of new Docent/Guide classes.
- Participate in division planning meetings to offer a coordinated range of programs throughout the year.
- Master’s degree in art history, art education, museum studies, the humanities, or related field.
- Knowledge of educational methodologies and philosophies, visitor research/evaluation, and gallery teaching practices.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in museum or other cultural institution in planning and implementing programs, exhibitions, visitor research, interpretation, and other activities for diverse audiences.
- Excellent written, verbal, and communication skills.
- Two years of recent museum experience working on interpretive exhibition teams highly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint software.
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects.
