Making Personal Ofrendas

Student artists in Mr. Elizondo and Ms. Milazzo’s classes at Humboldt Secondary School have made significant progress on their ofrendas since our last visit. Students have moved over the past month from an initial idea about who to honor, to research, notes, and sketches that helped shape how to honor that person. You can hear directly from students about their thought process through video blog posts.

Now, they are busy translating those ideas into deeply personal works of art. No two are alike. Some include traditional Mexican elements. Others pay honor to fallen heroes in other personally or culturally relevant ways.

A selection of the students’ finished ofrendas will be exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts beginning on October 22.

Posters promoting the exhibition "Young People's Ofrendas: Expressions of Life and Remembrance" line the walls of Humboldt Secondary School. We'd love help spreading posters around widely. Call 612-870-3103 to request one.
