Art in Bloom: Timeless Art AIBImage Fresh Flowers

MAY 1–4, 2014

MINNEAPOLIS, FEBRUARY 27, 2014–This spring at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA), thousands of fresh flowers will entice more than 25,000 visitors to experience the museum’s timeless art in an entirely new way. Presented by Friends of the Institute and now in its 31st year, Art in Bloom showcases more than 150 floral displays inspired by works of art in the MIA’s collection. General admission to Art in Bloom is free, with ticketed events held to further enrich visitors’ experience. The flora is fleeting: Art in Bloom is only on view May 1–4.

Art in Bloom dovetails nicely with the MIA’s special exhibition, “Matisse: Masterworks from The Baltimore Museum of Art,” which is ticketed and on view February 23–May 18, 2014. Florals were among Matisse’s primary sources of inspiration. Art in Bloom visitors are invited to visit the vivid “Matisse” exhibition and explore this renowned artist’s relationship with nature, joy, and beauty.

During Art in Bloom, the MIA welcomes distinguished speakers to participate in lectures and demonstrations. Among them, Laura Dowling, chief floral designer for the White House, will host “Flower Concepts, Crafts and Color: New Inspiration in the Garden Style,” a look at the romantic New Garden Style of using vines and flowers to emanate from a classical bouquet.

Other events include noted floral designer Bill Taylor’s demonstration “The History of Flower Arranging from the Egyptians to the Present,” and best-selling author James Farmer’s presentation, “Splendid Spring: A Time for Renewal.” Flowers After Hours, an evening event with live music, cocktails, flowers, and frivolity, is held Thursday, May 1.

These ticketed lectures, demonstrations, and luncheons, as well as sales from the Art in Bloom Pop-up Shop, fund Friends of the Institute initiatives to bring more than 81,000 schoolchildren to the museum each year, and provide nearly 93,000 pre-K through grade 12 students with off-site arts education.

Visit artsmia.org/art-in-bloom for the 2014 Art in Bloom program and to reserve event tickets. Tickets go on sale March 10 and are expected to sell quickly.
