Power of Vision Mural Project

Power of Vision Mural Project (POV) is an annual mural program that began in 2004 as part of Hope Community’s community building and place keeping initiatives. Since then, we have painted over 25 collaborative Murals in South Minneapolis, all centered on leadership development, skill-creation, and amplifying the stories and voices of participant artists by reflecting them in our physical environment. In 2014, POV expanded our scope and possibilities by becoming a partnership project with Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Young people participate in a mural visioning session.

In 2020-2021, Power of Vision mural project is working in collaboration with Colectivo Cielo Sin Limites, Sky without Limits Cooperative and Iquilinx Unidx por Justicia, United Renters for Justice. Colectivo Cielo Sin Limites is a tenant group of 5 apartment buildings in Minneapolis that have been working over two years, with the support of Inqulinx Unidx por Justicia to make their vision a reality, cooperative-run, safe and affordable housing. Earlier this year, they won ownership of their buildings, through a long and challenging fight to purchase them from a resistant and neglectful landlord. Throughout the summer of 2020, Power of Vision lead artists, Magdalena Kaluza, Nell Pierce, and Claudia Valentino have been leading a community engagement, design and painting process with a cohort of 6 tenants from Colectivo Cielo sin Límites. This process highlights the stories of struggle, victory and growth of this group, especially in a critical time of continued displacement and housing insecurity. This process will continue through June 2021. Cohort members and lead artists will spend time building relationships and developing technical skills over virtual sessions in the winter months. The mural will be created April through June of 2021, on a visible wall off 14th Ave and Lake Street in South Minneapolis.
