Friends Lecture: Mabel Wilson

<p>Discover the creative possibilities of working with clay in this introductory hand-building class. We&#8217;ll explore foundational ceramic techniques, including pinch pots, coil building, and slab construction, while creating functional and sculptural pieces.</p>
<p>Teaching artist Evelyn Staats will guide you through demonstrations of essential hand-building methods, from forming and shaping to surface decoration and finishing touches. Along the way, find inspiration in Mia&#8217;s remarkable collection of ceramics through occasional gallery visits. Most class sessions are devoted to hands-on studio time, with opportunities for creative exploration, individual instruction, and group conversation as you develop your own unique ceramic work.</p>

<p>Join us for the book launch of <em>Exhausting Jesus at the Minneapolis Institute of Art,</em> by local poet and master bread baker Danny Klecko. Published by St. Paul–based Paris Morning Publications, the book chronicles Klecko&#8217;s unprecedented 100-hour marathon contemplation of the 1851 painting <a href="https://collections.artsmia.org/art/104894/christus-consolator-ary-scheffer" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Christus Consolator</em></a> (Christ the Comforter) by Ary Scheffer.</p>

<p>The Sound Garden is an experiential offering to support personal well-being and resilience. Throughout history, humans have turned to the arts to express our joy, soothe our fears, ease our grief, and build community.</p>
<h2>About Sound Gardens</h2>
<p>Sound Gardens are self-guided, durational events, designed for a deepening experience over time, enriching the relationships between participants and the particular places they are planted. They represent a new way of experiencing sound and music as a spatial, 3D accompaniment to the “concerts” and “dances” that are already occurring in nature.</p>
<h2>What to Expect: &#8220;A Concert You Can Move Through&#8221;</h2>
<p>The Sound Garden is self-guided experience. You&#8217;re invited to sit, stand, lie down, and move around as you wish. Feel free to bring a blanket or to lay on the ground. We&#8217;ll provide a few.</p>
<p>While designed to be a deepening experience over time, you&#8217;re welcome to drop in at any time during the experience and stay for as much or as little time as you&#8217;re able to.</p>
<p>We request that you limit talking while in the Sound Garden so as to not disturb yours or others&#8217; listening experience.</p>
<p>There&#8217;ll be optional opportunities for reflection and participation. You&#8217;re also welcome to engage in quiet activities such as meditation, writing, or drawing.</p>
<h2>About the Artist</h2>
<p>The sound garden is presented by composter/director/historian/organizer JG Everest. He&#8217;s a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersections of engagement, ecology, history, and the emerging field of &#8220;neuroarts&#8221; through a variety of collaborative place-making practices. He creates site-specific performance installations that connect the histories, ecology, and cultures of places and communities, using spatial sound design as an integral compositional element.</p>
<p>Everest has worked as music director and sound designer, as well as a performer for many projects and performing ensembles, including over a decade each with Catalyst Dance and Roma di Luna. He regularly designs and leads integrative workshops and classes that connect participants to community, their own creativity, and the natural world, through a variety of disciplines and practices. He has brought his immersive, site specific &#8220;Sound Garden&#8221; installations to outdoor sites in the UK, Canada, and across the U.S. He was a 2019 McKnight Artist Composer Fellow, and 2025 MNPAiR Artist in Residences at Wild River State Park.</p>

<p>Join Grammy-nominated violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved; Rachel McGarry, Mia&#8217;s Elizabeth MacMillan Chair and Curator of European Art; and Max Bryant, Mia&#8217;s James Ford Bell Associate Curator of European Decorative Arts and Sculpture, for a salon-style evening of art and music to celebrate the conservation of an Italian Renaissance masterpiece.</p>
<p>Francesco Salviati’s monumental 1540s tapestry depicting the meeting of Dante and Virgil at the beginning of the <em>Inferno</em> returns to view at Mia following a meticulous restoration. The evening features a conversation and musical program that charts a course from 16th-century Italy to today, including a world premiere of a work composed specifically for this tapestry and gallery space.</p>
