Hands-on Art History: Contemporary China

What is Chinese contemporary art, and how has it developed in recent years? From the Open Door Policy of 1979, which prompted the rise of Chinese contemporary art, to the now robust Chinese art market, this class will explore how various forms of creative expression have developed over a period of significant social, political, and economic change in China. We’ll discuss artists like Liu Dan, whose work reinterprets the classical medium of Chinese ink painting in innovative ways, as well as artists including political dissident Ai Weiwei, whose work critically responds to Chinese culture and history. After wine, refreshments, and discussion, we’ll enjoy a performance by CAAM Chinese Dance Theater, linking the past to present-day Chinese culture.

$35; $28 My Mia members. Includes all materials and refreshments. Tickets are available online or by calling 612.870.6323.
