McKnight Discussion Series: Eugenie Tsai, David Goldes, Terry Gydesen

The McKnight Visual Artist Fellowships are awarded annually to established Minnesota-based artists. In 2017, eight McKnight Visual Artist Fellows were selected to receive $25,000 each along with an opportunity to meet with arts professionals from across the country.

This discussion series pairs a nationally recognized art critic or curator with two McKnight Visual Artist Fellows. It offers attendees an opportunity to learn more about the fellowship recipients as well as how their work intersects with broader contemporary art ideas and concerns.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Eugenie Tsai is the John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum. With Patrick Amsellem, she organized 21: Selections of Contemporary Art from the Brooklyn Museum, an installation that opened in 2008. Previously she was director of curatorial affairs at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in Queens, NY, as well as an independent curator with projects for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Berkeley Museum; and the Princeton University Art Museum. She also worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art as associate director for curatorial affairs. She organized the mid-career survey Threshold: Byron Kim, 1990-2004; Robert Smithson; and for Princeton University, Shuffling the Deck: The Collection Reconsidered. Tsai received a BA from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., and a PhD from Columbia University.

David Goldes explores the intersection and overlapping territories of art and science, photography, sculpture and drawing, still life, and performance to form the dynamic ground of his process and work. Physical phenomena including those associated with water, air pressure, and electricity are carefully examined while giving attention to the unexplained mysteries, resonances, and suggested subjectivities that expand simple explanations. He received his BA from SUNY Buffalo, MA from Harvard, and an MFA from the Visual Studies Workshop. The Yossi Milo Gallery, NY, represents his work.

Terry Gydesen is a documentary photographer/video artist whose past projects include Jesse Jackson’s 1988 presidential campaign, Paul Wellstone’s Senate career from 1990 to 2002, numerous local and national campaigns, and Prince’s 1993 European tour. Gydesen’s new work is her most personal: Transitions, A Daughter’s Journey, chronicles her parents’ move from their home into assisted living when, due to her father’s decline from Alzheimer’s and her mother’s deteriorating health, living independently was no longer an option. Gydesen will continue to make engaging images, facilitating dialogues among viewers about issues of aging, health care, memory loss, and how we talk or don’t talk about death and dying.

This series is co-presented by Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). Fellowships are funded by the McKnight Foundation and administered by MCAD.
