Sketching in the Galleries: Discovering Shape, The Second Visual Element

Sketching in the Galleries classes cover a wide variety of issues specifically related to skill development in the visual arts and art appreciation. Sessions start with a short lecture and discussion. Students then move to specific galleries throughout the museum to draw from works of art.

This week we will be discovering shape, the second visual element. A drawing distills the three-dimensional world we live in unto the two-dimensional world of the flat paper primarily through shape. Shape is a visual element that the draftsperson uses to communicate feelings and ideas. This happens in part through the relationship of shapes in the composition. The importance of shape cannot be understated. We will discuss and define the major shape categories and helpful ways to see them more clearly, and then draw from works in the permanent collection.
