Sketching in the Galleries: Drawing Fundamentals, Exploring Texture

Sketching in the Galleries classes cover a wide variety of issues specifically related to skill development in the visual arts and art appreciation. Sessions start with a short lecture and discussion. Students then move to specific galleries throughout the museum to draw from works of art.

This week we will explore one of the fundamentals of drawing: texture. Everyone has had the experience of wanting to touch a work of art. Texture is an important visual property that draws one’s attention into a work of art. The types of texture we find in the visual arts and the important qualities for their accurate representation will be discussed and practiced in drawings made from works in the galleries.
