Sketching in the Galleries: Exploring the Visual Elements, Light and Value

Sketching in the Galleries classes cover a wide variety of issues specifically related to skill development in the visual arts and art appreciation. Sessions start with a short lecture and discussion. Students then move to specific galleries throughout the museum to draw from works of art.

This week, we will be exploring the visual elements of light and value. The value, or tonal scale, is the range of darks and lights in an artwork. It is one of the draftspersons major tools for creating volume, mass and space. Studying light and shade is a joy and critical to the application of the value scale. This class will discuss and demonstrate the power of value in works of art. Drawings done by students in the galleries will concentrate on its application in working from the permanent collection.
