Sketching in the Galleries: Line, The First Visual Element

Sketching in the Galleries classes cover a wide variety of issues specifically related to skill development in the visual arts and art appreciation. Sessions start with a short lecture and discussion. Students then move to specific galleries throughout the museum to draw from works of art.

This week we will explore line, the first and most important of the visual elements of art. Line underlies creation of form and compositional efforts. This class will define and explore concepts of line that are critical to the visual artist. The presentation will explore its use in form and composition, and then exploring these ideas in the galleries as we draw from the permanent collection.
