Sketching in the Galleries: Principles of Design, Contrast

The juxtaposition of dissimilar elements creates contrast in a work of art. It is one of the necessary design aspects of successful work. Dramatic effects are one of the results of contrast, but subtle contrasts can also have a profound effect on the feeling and content of a work. We will explore various types of visual contrast in the classroom and create them in drawings from works in the galleries.
