Sketching in the Galleries: Principles of Design, Directional Forces

Sequence is the path or gesture in an artwork. It is created through visual directional forces in the work. We initially view a work as an ensemble and then are drawn into the specifics of its sequence. Line, both real and implied, creates this movement. In the classroom presentation we will analyze the application of directional forces with examples from the history of art. Students will draw from paintings in the collection to study methods of using line to create directional forces and sequence.
