During the 15th century, the bedroom was the most private and symbolic room in patrician homes, the locus of conception, birth, sickness, and death. It was a place for tapestries, altar pieces, and chests laden with treasures and familial symbolism. The chests had painted scenes of battle as reminders of hard-won power or triumphant moral virtue. This exhibition features period paintings, works on paper, ceramics, and a matrimonial chest to explore the public face of this intimate chamber.
