Works of art often tell stories about the artists who made them–their personal histories and the places and times in which they lived. Learning about the stories behind the art helps us build empathy and make connections between our own experiences and those of others. This unit uses the power of visual storytelling to explore the meaning of identity, encourage self-expression, and foster a sense of community and belonging.

By making connections between artworks in Mia’s Asian art collection and the work of Asian and Asian American artists working in the Twin Cities today, Our Stories provides inclusive and humanizing lessons on Asian art.
