Two workers wearing protective gear and tending to the beehives on Mia's roof

Beehives

In 2013, Mia partnered with the University of Minnesota’s Bee Squad to install four beehives on the roof of the museum. The bees prospered, becoming pollinators for city gardens and trees, and Mia’s “Rooftop Gold” honey collected that year from the hives sold out in the Store at Mia. In 2014, the Green Team doubled the number of hives on the roof to eight.

In 2022 the University of Minnesota’s Bee Squad discontinued the rooftop bees program. The Bee Squad determined that there are now plenty of honey bees in the metro area and were growing concerned that they were competing with wild, native bumble and solitary bee species for food. We were sad to see our honey bees go, but know that it is best for the whole ecosystem.
