Lecture: Chris Strand “Winterthur: The Last Wild Garden”

Chris Strand, the Garden and Estate Director of Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in Delaware, will speak on the vision of Henry Francis du Pont and his creation of Winterthur’s 60-acre naturalistic garden. It remains as one of the last original wild gardens of the early 20th century, and Strand will delight us with its fascinating history and masterful creation. The garden enhances the natural setting with naturalized exotics planted in lyrical color combinations that bloom from late January to November.

Owner of a thriving, coast-to-coast chain of floral design schools, “Florist to the Stars” designer Michael Gaffney promises to teach us “the DaVinci Code of flower design with proven formulas based on math, science, and architecture!” He has appeared on the Today Show, the Hallmark Channel, and was voted most interesting guest on Martha Stewart. His arrangements will be auctioned off by Tracy Luther immediately following his demonstration. His latest book, Flower Power, will be available for purchase.

Karin Woodward, lead designer and owner of Haute Horticulture, considers floral design an art with limitless possibilities. She’ll share themed arrangements, such as an edible tablescape, and will show us how to make a “flower wheel” by deconstructing one of her creations. She’ll also discuss her commitment to seasonal floral arrangements in tune with our internal sense of timing—“like ripe summer peaches.” Woodward’s arrangements will be auctioned off by Tracy Luther immediately following her demonstration.

Only your child’s imagination will limit the amazing Monarch inspired crafts and activities.

View an educational Monarch video. Make a butterfly crown with real flowers from Bachman’s. Flutter around the museum’s third floor on a scavenger hunt. Join in chalk drawing outside and create your own butterfly.
