Education Volunteer Opportunities

Inspire wonder through the power of art by engaging K–6 students in guided activities in Mia’s galleries.

Mia offers multiple volunteer opportunities to meet the needs of our community. Currently the strongest demand is for school programs. We will continue to adapt our programs as we learn and evolve. There will be more opportunities in the future for different types of volunteers, including adult tour guides. We will update the website when new opportunities are available.

Choose from two volunteer programs:

  • Discovery Days
  • School Guides

About the Programs

Discovery Days volunteers facilitate object-centered discussions and hands-on activities for groups of K–5 learners at Discovery stations and in the galleries. They help encourage students to be curious and creative, and to make connections between global art and their own lives.

School Guides lead thematic tours from Mia’s Art Adventure series and permanent-collection Highlights tours. They help provide a positive museum experience for K–6 students and encourage return visits with friends and family.

Here is an overview of the volunteer program duties and requirements to help decide what is right for you.

Volunteer Qualities

  • Mia education volunteers enjoy engaging with children from all backgrounds. They embrace flexibility by adapting activities to grade level and student interests.
  • We are seeking greater diversity in our volunteer programs to better reflect the demographics of the schools we serve. We want students to see themselves at the museum.
  • Some prior experience working with youth is helpful to succeed in these roles. You do not need any prior experience in museums, art, or education. We will train you!
