SOLD OUT: Claudia Rankine on the Possibilities of Empathy

Poet, playwright, and professor Claudia Rankine uses her work to explore the meanings of race and representation and the possibilities of empathy in the American imagination. She writes of the painful experiences of lived racism for people of color, and interrogates the complicity of white people who both cause and distance themselves from this experience. In this talk, she examines how one might better empathize with someone whose experience of racial discrimination they cannot share.

Claudia Rankine is the author of five poetry collections, including the bestseller Citizen—An American Lyric (Graywolf Press, 2014) and the play The White Card (2019). She is a professor at Yale University, a winner of the 2016 MacArthur Fellowship, and co-founder of the Racial Imaginary Institute, an interdisciplinary cultural laboratory.
