Family Day: Horses!

This month we’re all about horses in celebration of our current exhibition, “Horse Nation of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ.” At this FREE event, we’ll make puppets and wearable masks inspired by our four-legged friends, hear songs that honor them, and even meet some real horses while learning about Dakota traditions from Native artists and teachers.

Activity Schedule

Art-Making: Horse Puppets
11AM-4:30PM
Create a horse shadow puppet that moves with artists Graci Horn, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and Juan Lucero Isleta Pueblo.

Art-Making: Horse Masks

Design a horse sculpture you can wear with artist Marlena Myles.

Demo: Dakota Wichoan Horses
Noon – 3PM
Meet horses and find out what we can learn about Dakota (Dakhóta) traditions from these four-legged teachers and the Ṡuƞkṭáƞka Wic̣ayuhapi (They Care for the Horse) Program.

Demo: Horse Regalia
Noon & 2PM
Hear songs that honor horses and learn about the special decorations they wear with artists James Star Comes Out and Orlando Frazier.

Gallery Hunt: I Spy Horses

Can you find horses in the galleries? Collect a prize in the lobby once you’ve found them all!

Preschool Tours: Animals
11:30AM & 12:30PM
Gallop, trot, and prance around the museum in search of animals on a tour designed especially for little ones.
