Emily Allchurch | Tokyo Story: Journey in the Footsteps of a Master
British artist Emily Allchurch discusses the work of Hiroshige, the 19th-century Japanese artist whose ukiyo-e wood-block prints influenced the French Impressionists and, 150 years later, inspired her own enchanting homages. Allchurch took thousands of photographs of Tokyo and digitally stitched them together to create light boxes that are modern-day updates of Hiroshige’s 100 Views of Edo, his last and most famous series. But instead of Hiroshige’s catfish in the water, Allchurch floats a Coke can downstream, juxtaposing contemporary Japan with its past.
