Friends Lecture: Yvonne and Gabriel Weisberg

With generous support from the Mark and Mary Goff Fiterman Fund, the Friends of the Institute present “Reflections on Reality: A Conversation with Gabe and Yvonne Weisberg”.

In 1969, Gabe and Yvonne Weisberg purchased The Rag Picker by François Bonvin in London. This initial acquisition was the first work in an impressive art collection of Belgian and French Realists (1830-1930). For fifty years, the Weisbergs spent summers in the small galleries and flea markets of Europe buying paintings and drawings by the Realists, important and sometimes overlooked artists. These artworks provide an intimate opportunity to connect with a person or place other artists did not view as worthwhile subject matter. In the 1990s, their collection of drawings were procured as a gift to Mia. The collection has continued to grow with many forgotten superb artists, including Charles Milcendeau, Edgar Chahine, and Boutet de Monvel. The Weisbergs will discuss their labor of love with Tom Raisseur, the John E. Andrus III Curator of Prints and Drawings.

Prints from their collection are now on view in galleries 315 and 316 in Reflections on Reality: Drawings and Paintings from the Weisberg Collection (through December 10, 2023).
