Ragamala Dance Company Presents Moving Bronzes
To celebrate Mia’s new special exhibition, “Royal Bronzes: Cambodian Art of the Divine,” which features a colossal sculpture of the Hindu god Vishnu, Ragamala Dance Company’s Moving Bronzes brings to life the gods and goddesses of Hindu mythology, transforming the theater into a temple sanctum.
The performance opens with an ode to Mahavishnu, the protector, who brought into existence the five elements, then the five senses, and finally all living beings and the natural world. Mother/daughter creators and dancers Ranee, Aparna, and Ashwini Ramaswamy explore the eternal relationship between the deity and the devotee, invoking infinite cycles of time, nature, and human experience.
Moving Bronzes intertwines transcendent music, movement, and poetry rooted in South Indian tradition that resonates across cultures. Through this visually stunning and emotionally compelling performance, Ragamala Dance Company continues its legacy of forging meaningful connections between ancient art forms and contemporary life.
Following the performance, join us for engaging discussion between Ranee, Aparna, and Ashwini Ramaswamy and Vasudha Narayanan, a professor of religion and the director of the Center for the study of Hindu Traditions at the University of Florida. Raag on 50th – Modern Indian Cuisine will cater a community reception to close out the afternoon.
