Sketching in the Galleries: Exploring the Visual Elements of Volume and Mass

Sketching in the Galleries classes cover a wide variety of issues specifically related to skill development in the visual arts and art appreciation. Sessions start with a short lecture and discussion. Students then move to specific galleries throughout the museum to draw from works of art.

This week, we will explore the visual elements of volume and mass. The magic of a drawing is often found in its clear representation of forms with a strong sense of volume and weight. We will explore techniques the artist uses to create these illusions of both object and mass. Drawings will be done from the permanent collection using these approaches to help students develop their skills in convincingly representing forms in space.
