Sketching in the Galleries: Principles of Design, Emphasis/Subordination

Emphasis and subordination create hierarchy in an artwork. Emphasis is an area or passage that draws attention to itself. It exists in comparison to subordination, passages that are secondary, supporting the emphasis in the work. Students will explore these compositional tools to create such passages in their work while drawing from works in the museum’s collection.
