Stories from Liu Dan
An innovative master of ink painting and calligraphy, Liu Dan creates unexpected ink still-lifes and monumental landscapes that refresh our view of traditional Chinese ink painting. Since he was a youth in China under the Cultural Revolution, Liu Dan has been a Red Guard, a farmer, an art studio apprentice, a professional painter, a bohemian in Honolulu and New York for over 25 years, and a collector’s favorite. Join us for a dialogue between Liu Dan and art scholars to hear about this extraordinary artist’s life and perspectives.
Lui Dan will be joined for a panel discussion by:
Liu Yang, PhD, the curator of Chinese art and head of the Department of China, South and Southeast Asian Art at Mia.
Kathleen M. Ryor, PhD, the Tanaka Memorial Professor of International Understanding and Art History at Carleton College, Northfield.
Elizabeth Kindall, PhD, associate professor of art history at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, specializes in Chinese landscape painting.
