Talk: Ken Matsubara

Join us for a conversation between Japanese contemporary painter Ken Matsubara (b. 1948) and Dr. Mai Yamaguchi, Andrew W. Mellon Assistant Curator of Japanese and Korean art at Mia. They will discuss the evolution of his art and focus on the creation of Matsubara’s monumental screens, Chaos (1983), recently acquired by Mia.

Ken Matsubara (1948-) was born in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. His first “teacher” of painting came in the form of Buddhist works in the collection of a relative’s temple, where he grew up. His paintings and sculptures are deeply rooted in the Buddhist worldview, expressed through abstraction.
