Talk: Sunkoo Yuh: Mundane Life


Sunkoo Yuh’s sculptures are reflections of “stacked histories,” drawing from personal experiences and daily encounters. In this talk, Yuh delves into his artistic journey, exploring his cultural background, influences, relationships, and concerns. He will particularly focus on his acclaimed artwork “Monument to Parents,” on view in The Shape of Time: Korean Art after 1989, through June 23, 2024. Join us to gain insights into the intricate layers of Yuh’s art and the stories it tells.

Sunkoo Yuh is professor of art at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, University of Georgia, Athens. He earned his MFA at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred (1997), and his BFA at Seoul’s Hongik University (1988). He has held residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana (2018); John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin (2014); and the Ceramic Creative Center at South Korea’s Clayarch Gimhae Museum (2013), to name a few. His work has been exhibited at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Alabama (2019); Seoul Museum of Art (2017); and Clayarch Gimhae Museum (2013), among many other venues. Yuh has also participated in France’s International Biennale of Vallauris (2016) and the Renwick Craft Invitational 2009, Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC. He was awarded the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant in 2005 and won the Grand Prize at South Korea’s 2nd World Ceramic Biennale 2003, Icheon, among many other awards.
