Virtual Third Thursday: Discovering Book Arts
You know about “books” and “art,” but what are “book arts”? Join Minnesota Center for Book Arts to learn about this captivating group of art forms that range from traditional skills such as papermaking, letterpress printing, and bookbinding, to new methods of art-making inspired by the form and function of books. In this video, MCBA Lead Teaching Artist Madeline Garcia will provide an interdisciplinary introduction to book arts, offer an up-close view of some bookish pieces currently on view at Mia, and teach you how to make an accordion book and single-sheet zine of your own! If you want to prepare in advance to make your own books as you watch, you can start by gathering these simple, household materials:
– 2-8 ½ x 11 in. sheets of paper
– A bone folder (or replacement like a smooth pen or butterknife)
– Scissors
This Third Thursday connects to the following exhibitions on view now, Harriet Bart: Artist Books + Works on Paper, and A Collector’s Odyssey: Books & Prints from the William P. Kosmas Collection.
General Museum Admission is currently available Thursday–Sunday, 10AM–5PM. Reservations are currently available for the next three weeks.
