Much about the medium hinges on reflections; the early photographic process of the daguerreotype itself is mirrorlike, and the silver in gelatin silver prints sometimes emerges on the surface, producing a mirroring effect. Compositionally and conceptually, photographers have also employed reflections to dramatic effect.
