Using computer imaging software and modernist philosophies of pure form, Field Inversion is a site-specific sculpture by collaborators Luke Axelson and Josh Ritenour. The sinuous shape you see is based on a set of connected geometrical planes that make a three-dimensional volume. Axelson and Ritenour carefully scaled their design to the specific dimensions of the stairwell with MIA blueprints and used special latex-base paint that will dramatically reflect the sunlight from the wall of west-facing windows. The result is an elegantly simple but mathematically complex 30-foot suspended sculpture. As visitors go up or down the staircase, they see how the artists designed it to create dramatic vantage points visible from all three stories of the Target Wing staircase.

MCAD@MIA is an ongoing partnership between the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). The goal of this juried collaboration is to encourage art students to create new and innovative work that responds to the architecture, space, and/or collections of the museum. MCAD students are given the unique opportunity to work with the MIA staff in the institutional setting of the museum and gain unique professional experiences. MCAD@MIA promotes an educational collaboration beyond the conventional involvements of communities and museums.
