Drawing on personal accounts, popular movies, government films, found footage, archival images, home movies, and YouTube videos, artist Nguyen Trinh Thi explores her homeland, Vietnam, in Fifth Cinema. Through this hybrid essay-film, she interrogates local, official histories as well as international viewpoints on Vietnam to discover how film can reclaim Indigenous history and land from colonization and Western influences. Fifth Cinema seeks a space between personal and collective memory, while documenting the artist’s continuing interest in letting others speak for themselves.
