Young People’s Ofrendas: Expressions of Life & Remembrance
October 21, 2014 - November 30, 2014
Katherine Kierland Herberger Gallery 110
Free Exhibition
This annual exhibition features ofrendas—altars or shrines—made by high school students in four Minnesota schools as part of the “Young People’s Ofrendas” program. Students pay tribute to the rich cultural traditions of Mexico’s Day of the Dead by creating their own personal and contemporary ofrendas to honor friends, family, or community members who have passed away. After spending time in the classroom and the museum’s galleries, discussing art, memory, and diverse cultural practices for honoring the dead, students channel their creativity into their own personal creations, which are displayed in the museum’s Community Commons.
