The Curatorial Department Assistant provides administrative and directed curatorial support to the department of Chinese, South and Southeast Asian Art, as well as to the Asian Art Affinity Group. This position requires a person with interest in Asian Art or culture and basic skill in Chinese language.
In this role, you will…
Perform all administrative duties for the department, including: typing correspondence, labels, manuscripts and articles; organizing and maintaining office files; making photocopies and routing mail; assisting in preparation of PowerPoint presentations; greeting and assisting visitors; maintaining appointment schedule and handling the curators’ travel requests; ordering supplies.
Perform certain duties requiring some area expertise, such as assisting interns and docents with inquiries and research, and responding to phone requests.
Coordinate Asian Affinity Group activities including membership, special events, minutes and mailings.
Assist curators with compiling and proofreading all material intended for publication.
Assist curators when preparing exhibitions and gallery rotations, and in handling art in galleries, exhibitions, and storage when necessary.
Specific Requirements
College coursework in the humanities or Asian art history.
Demonstrated interest in Asian art or culture with basic skill in Chinese language.
Minimum of three years of administrative experience with organizational emphasis.
Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Excellent professional skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Must have very good language and communication skills and be self-motivated, with the ability to initiate and follow through on independent projects and those assigned.
Ability to work with and communicate effectively with people of a variety of different educational, ethnic, language and economic backgrounds.
Must maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive departmental relations and records.
Nonprofit/museum experience desirable.
