Visitor Experience Representative (Casual)

The Job

Welcome visitors to the museum by listening, orienting and assisting them to make sure they have everything they need to have a phenomenal experience. Help visitors feel included, encourage them to see new galleries and try new programs, advise them on what the museum has to offer. Perform sales duties, update customer records, and keep database accurate. Represent Mia in a positive and professional manner in all interactions with visitors, volunteers, and museum staff.

*Temporary position lasting approximately 6 months*

In this role, you will…

  • Craft a welcoming, accessible, accepting, and audience-focused experience for a diverse population of visitors.
  • Give individual service.
  • Assist visitors and My Mia members by providing information and services at multiple sites and channels that will improve the visitor’s experience.
  • Verbally relay museum guidelines and rules.
  • Distribute objects like maps or audio devices.
  • Suggest Mia’s galleries, exhibitions, programs, or events to improve the visitor’s experience.
  • Provide general website/technical support to visitors and callers.
  • Actively listen and observe to discover the needs of the visitors.
  • Ask clarifying questions to find the reason for their visit.
  • Demonstrate empathy and patience.
  • Answer questions and resolve concerns.
  • Maintain composure under pressure and/or in a busy environment.
  • Work toward established department service, attendance and revenue goals.
  • Clearly explain and promote My Mia and donations.
  • Take registrations to museum offerings and process sales.
  • Provide feedback to management on departmental and organizational tools and work culture.
  • Stay up-to-date on the internal exhibition and event calendars, on all departmental communications, deadlines, and readings.
  • Stay informed of other cultural organizations and what they are doing or offering in the area as well as nationally for suggestions or reference questions.
  • Look up and enter all required data in the ticketing/database software and issue tickets or order confirmations as needed.
  • Accurately enter all essential data and update records as needed.
  • Assist with database maintenance and updates by completing occasional documentation and/or supervised testing.
  • Provide back up for team members and act in a professional and friendly manner with all colleagues.
  • Work as a team and ask for help from team members and management as needed.
  • Assist with lobby traffic, internal clients, and with school and tour groups, planned or unplanned.
  • Make Public Address announcements as needed.
  • Staff special events and programs throughout the museum inside and outside of regular museum hours.
  • Attend occasional technical or work culture trainings inside and outside of regular schedule.
  • These include but are not limited to data entry and clean-up, preparing museum mailings, training incoming employees, responding to online correspondence.

Skills/Experience

  • Pleasant phone manner;
  • Ability to work well and pleasantly with the public in a dynamic environment;
  • Be able to communicate with a diverse group of people.
  • Good personal computer and keyboarding skills.
  • Discretion- position has access to confidential records.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Ability to stay organized and maintain accuracy in data entry and financial transactions.
  • A self-motivated learner
  • Good listening skills
  • Ability to practice empathy and patience.
  • 2 years of previous sales or customer service experience
  • Previous experience interacting with computers in some way.
  • Language: Mia offers Foreign Language Incentive Pay. If a staff person can pass a proctored language proficiency test in Spanish, Somali, Hmong, or ASL they will receive an hourly increase. Test questions may include reading, writing, and speaking.
