Taking place in the Bell Family Decorative Arts Court, this free exhibition captures Parisian nightlife in the late 1800s

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) is excited to announce its latest exhibition centered around Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s famous “At the Moulin Rouge,” on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago. The painting and exhibition will be available for viewing from Oct. 12, 2024, to March 9, 2025, in the Bell Family Decorative Arts Court in gallery 333.

An aristocratic transplant to Paris’s bohemian haunts, Toulouse-Lautrec captured the nightclubs and cabarets of Montmartre in the 1880s and ’90s, setting to canvas and paper their glittering lights and dazzling entertainments. Among his favorite spots were Le Chat Noir, Le Mirliton—and, above all others, the Moulin Rouge. One of his most remarkable paintings, “At the Moulin Rouge,” captures a night at the legendary nightclub with a band of regulars, including several of its most famous performers and Toulouse-Lautrec himself.

“We are thrilled to welcome visitors to view ‘At the Moulin Rouge’ as well as the exhibition focused on the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and others of his time,” said Galina Olmsted, associate curator of European art at Mia. “A true masterpiece, this iconic painting is complemented by Mia’s extraordinary collection of works by the artist and others from that same period.”

“Collaboration and cultural exchange are more essential than ever, as they enable broader audiences to experience the transformative power of great art,” said Katie Luber, Mia’s Nivin and Duncan MacMillan Director & President. “We are profoundly grateful to our colleagues at the Art Institute of Chicago for their partnership, which has made it possible to bring this remarkable exhibition to our community and share the enduring legacy of these works.”

In addition to the iconic “At the Moulin Rouge,” the free exhibition features an array of works by Toulouse-Lautrec and others, including rarely-seen prints, posters, and drawings. These pieces vividly capture the evolution of Parisian nightlife during the late 19th century, offering a unique glimpse into the bohemian world of cabarets, cafés, and dance halls that shaped the era’s social and artistic landscape.
