Love was in the air on February 13 and 14 when the Minneapolis Institute of Art once again transformed into the Minneapolis Institute of Hearts. In a nod to Valentine’s Day, museum-goers are offered paper hearts to leave with their favorite works of art. It’s become my favorite event at the museum, as this simple, sweet gesture results in thousands of valentines lining the gallery floors—as well as some adorable personal notes to artworks or artists. Some of you shared your valentines with #MIAhearts while others, perhaps more bashful, remain secret admirers.
In any case, it wasn’t hard to spot your favorites (alas, relationships with art aren’t often monogamous). The most beloved objects included the racy Tatra, the timeless Jade Mountain, Do Ho Suh’s powerful Some/One, Sowah Kwei’s lobster-shaped Fantasy Coffin, the luminous Chihuly Sunburst, and Yoshitomo Nara’s lovable puppy Your Dog. The most surprising winner of your hearts? Probably The Coaci Inkstand, full of secrets but romantic in its way: swing a lever beneath the fountain and the two doves kiss.
Here are a few of our favorite hearts left behind by you.
Thanks for showing your love! Looking forward to next year… xoxo
