Wakpa Triennial: Minneapolis Institute of Art

How are we related? How do we overcome divisions? How can art help us to consider what we hold in common so that everyone thrives? Who is included in our networks of mutuality? How can art help us to envision new futures?

These are questions to consider through the inaugural Wakpa Triennial, from June 24 to September 16, 2023. The 2023 theme, Network of Mutuality, refers to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, which addressed inextricable links among humans. In the letter, he writes: “we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality [. . .] whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”

Explore Triennial themes through art in Mia’s collection: interrelatedness, social justice, and mutual care; connections among humans, and connections between humans and the earth. And imagine the future we want to build together.
