Artist Talk: Engaging Communities Through Social Practice
What does it mean to ethically engage a community with reciprocity and inclusion-centered practices? Engaging community is a central tenant for social practice artists—artists who center collaboration, often participatory projects, within their work. But what does the reality look like in today’s social and political climate? What happens when an institution or organization is introduced into the mix?
Monica Sheets creates spaces for dialogue and engagement that explore topics such as urban development, economics, and civics. The panel conversation is held in conjunction with her exhibition Das Fundbuero — Civics Lessons, now on view through February 26th, 2023.
This exhibition and talk are part of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program, a curatorial program at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The MAEP is generously sponsored by the McKnight Foundation.
