Jennifer Nevitt: Sans Terre

Downloadable PDF

Minneapolis, October, 19, 2017–The Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP) at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) presents “Sans Terre,” an exhibition by Minneapolis-based artist Jennifer Nevitt. In her first solo museum exhibition, Nevitt showcases new paintings and sculptures that reference spaces of transition, both physically and psychologically. On view November 16, 2017, through February, 18, 2018, “Sans Terre” transforms the gallery into a space where one can quietly observe and listen to a conversation between our past selves and future experiences.

Influenced by the idea that real life expands our concept of art, Nevitt uses painting, sculpture, and textiles to explore narratives pertaining to the human experience of dwelling and being. Using familiar materials like paper, textiles, wood, and charcoal, she creates works expressive of the body to examine how one nurtures and cares for it. Her large-scale translucent shrouds—woven from locally sourced and spun Icelandic wool—hang throughout the gallery, conveying a sense of the body and its ultimate passing. Meanwhile, at the gallery entrance, Nevitt uses color, structure, and pattern in her boldly colored paintings resembling  maritime signal flags to investigate ways of communicating over distances.
