MINNEAPOLIS, March 22, 2022—The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) today announced it will resume in-person tours in April. With the help of Mia’s trained guides, tours allow visitors to discover the museum and experience art in new ways. The museum offers tours that focus on the permanent collection, special exhibition, and Purcell-Cutts house.
“Mia is excited to welcome visitors back to the museum for in-person tours,” said Katie Luber, Nivin and Duncan MacMillan Director and President of Mia. “Tours bring art alive through conversation and discussion and invite visitors to connect the artworks to their own lives. Our trained guides do a phenomenal job creating a dialogue and making art accessible and exciting for all our visitors.”
Permanent collection tours, which are free, include:
• Current Conversations: Centered around a new topic every month, these public tours engage visitors in current, thought-provoking conversations while exploring Mia’s permanent collection.
• Book Tours: Books tours promote lively discussions of artworks related to popular books. A different title is selected each month. In April, Mia will offer two in-person public tours for The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. A list of upcoming books can be found at artsmia.org.
• Cross Currents: Gallery Conversations: On select weekends, visitors can experience five different gallery stops in a self-directed thematic art quest. A Cross Currents tour map takes you through the museum to explore cultural connections at your own pace, with Mia guides present for questions and discussion.
Guided in-person tours of Mia’s current special exhibition, “Supernatural America: The Paranormal in American Art,” will also begin in April. Tours will take place April 3, 6, 10, 17, and 20 as well as May 4 and 11, 2–3 p.m. Tours are free, but an exhibition ticket is required.
Tours will also resume at the Purcell-Cutts House. Designed and built by William Gray Purcell and George Grant Elmslie in 1913, the Purcell-Cutts House is one of the most significant examples of Prairie School–style architecture in the country.
House tours will feature new focus areas, including hygiene and health in design and women in architecture. The tour will also discuss the history of race and access to housing in Minneapolis in the early 1900s.
Tours are offered the second full weekend of each month. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for members, and free for youth 17 and under.
In addition to in-person tours, Mia will continue to provide virtual tour options.
