Educator Workshop: Art, Politics, and the History of Germany in Turbulent Times

Join Mia and The National WWII Museum for a collaborative educator workshop exploring the powerful connections between art, history, and culture.
You&#8217;ll begin the day with a presentation by a National WWII Museum curator on the political and social climate in Germany leading up to World War II, followed by an experiential visit to Mia’s special exhibition &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/modern-art-politics-germany-1910-1945">Modern Art &amp; Politics in Germany 1910–1945: Masterworks from the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin</a>.&#8221; Together, we’ll examine how the rise of totalitarianism impacted artists, how certain forms of artistic expression were censored or suppressed, and how art became both a reflection of and a response to political upheaval.
In the afternoon, you&#8217;ll explore classroom-ready resources from both institutions. The National WWII Museum will present Stolen! Saving Europe’s Treasures, an exploration of the massive art thefts that occurred during WWII, as well as its Homefront and Liberation &amp; Legacy curriculum guides. Mia educators will introduce the Modern Art &amp; Politics in Germany educator guide and related activities that connect the exhibition to Mia’s permanent collection.
This interdisciplinary professional development opportunity will equip you with new tools for engaging students in the study of history through art, deepening their understanding of how culture both shapes and reflects pivotal historical moments.
Breakfast, lunch, and curriculum materials are provided. Registration opens February 2 and closes March 2. The workshop has a capacity of 30 participants.
